2008 USTA Girls’ 18 National Championships
SCHROEDER SCHOLARSHIP

National Tennis Championships, the non-profit corporation that organizes the USTA Girls’ 18 National Championships, is proud to be honoring Frederick Rudolph “Ted” Schroeder, Jr. with a Scholarship in his name.

During his lifetime, Ted not only achieved greatness in tennis, he was a silent benefactor of the tournament.  His generous financial support enabled the tournament to thrive at its former home in San Jose, and helped to facilitate the successful transition to its new home in Berkeley.

Because Ted achieved his tennis successes long before even many of the Nationals parents and coaches were born, many are not aware of his prominence.  A life-long friend and doubles partner of Jack Kramer and a WWII navy fighter pilot, his achievements include:

1939 National Boys’ 18 Singles Champion
#1 Ranked Player in the World in 1942
#2 Ranked Player for four consecutive years - 1946-1949
1942 US Open Singles and Mixed Doubles Champion with Louise Brough
1940, 1941, and 1947 US Open Doubles Champion with Jack Kramer
1946 Davis Cup Championship Team
1949 Wimbledon Singles Champion
1966 Inductee into the International Tennis Hall of Fame
